Okay so not too bad… With my weird and injury plagued summer I really had no real expectations for this race. But glad I went and did the event. Several friends from KC were down there plus a few others with the Tri-KC club that I don’t know but saw on the course and we yelled “GO KC!!” to each other as we passed during the run.
Jared killed the swim and the bike and came into T2 with a big lead. Unfortunatley the run is not his strength and the really good runners behind him caught him during the run. He still finished 14th overall and 3rd in his 30-34 AG. It was really inspiring to see him on his return to transition on the bike with such a big lead. Fired me up that he was doing so well and I picked up my pace after that. Worked out great too because myself and another guy in my AG got away from the group of about 6 that we were in and afraid we’d get nailed for drafting. I think he was thinking the same thing because I passed them all and he was the only one to follow. With about 14 miles left in the bike he passed me. I asked if he thought we’d finally shed those guys and he said he hoped so and he put a pretty good gap on me after that.
Troy did well too… once he made it out of the water! If he can get his swim figured out and Jared gets his run going they will be beasts. Jeff did the half aquabike due to a soleous issue like I had over the summer and came in 7th OA and 2nd in his AG.
I on the other hand felt okay about how I did. Was hoping to be under 30 for the swim and exited the water in 33 and change. Little to no contact with other swimmers in the water which was great. And since my bike training wasn’t great I took it easy and tried to hit my heart rate zones saving myself for the run. The bike course was relatively flat with just a few shallow rollers. Aside from some rough chip and seal pavement in one section the bike course was pretty awesome.
Run course was real flat as well but pretty open to the sun. It was around 85 with no wind so it got pretty warm. I had hydrated pretty well on the bike and peed 4 or 5 times during the ride so thought I’d be okay. Uh and no I didn’t stop. Just let er go. Sorry if that’s TMI!
Somewhere between T2 and mile 2 I lost one of my flasks with my Gator/CarboPro mix so I had to change my drinking plan. Thinking I needed to conserve my nutrition was a mistake as I got way off and probably didn’t take in enough during the run. Again not sure how ready I was I tried to go off heart rate but just could not get under 160 from the start of the run. Finally I gave in and just ran by feel and didn’t even look at heart rate after mile 3.
By the time I got to mile 10 I was pretty well shot and walked the last couple aid stations… which were awesome BTW. They had cold rags and sponges which felt great! By mile 12 I was feeling better. As I passed a couple lady volunteers one of them said “you are looking so good?!… a little thin but good!” The other one said “are you back already?!” It was pretty funny… guess you had to be there.
Anyway felt good hitting the last 100 yards or so and crossed the finish with a PR by a minute plus. As I was leaning my head on the fence trying to regroup, the guy I escaped with on the bike came by to offer congrats which I thought was really cool of him.
So great event and pretty decent race. As it turned out, the top 6 finishers were in my age group and got pulled from the age group awards. So I finished 2nd in my AG. I sent an email to the race director to see if they’d mail be my award… We’ll see.
